Ōtsuka Lotēc, led by Jiro Katayama, is set to release an innovative new timepiece this spring: the No.5 KAI. This mechanical watch features a one-of-a-kind design with rotating numeral discs that orbit around the dial in a satellite-like motion, offering a fresh way to read the time. Fixed hour markers complement the rotating discs, ensuring the time is clearly indicated.
The No.5 KAI has a 40.5mm case diameter and a 7.6mm thickness, making it sleek and wearable. The sapphire crystal provides a clear view of the minute index plate and hour disks, which create interesting shadows as they move across the face, adding a dynamic visual element to the watch.
This new model builds on the original No.5 from 2012, with updates to the case design and improvements to the mechanism. The watch uses two Japan-made ball bearings from MinebeaMitsumi to enhance its smooth movement. Powered by a Miyota movement with an in-house satellite hour module, the No.5 KAI also addresses the common issue of backlash between the components with a double reduction gear.
The satellite hour mechanism, initially developed for night clocks, has been adapted for this wristwatch, ensuring the hour and minute display is easily visible despite sleeve cuffs. The timepiece’s design is both functional and visually appealing, perfect for those looking for something unique in the world of horology.
Priced at ¥748,000 JPY (approx. $4,770 USD), the No.5 KAI will be available via a raffle system on Ōtsuka Lotēc’s official website in March.
