Apple and SpaceX have teamed up for a groundbreaking update that allows iPhones to connect to Starlink satellites, bringing better off-grid communication to users. The feature, which comes with the iOS 18.3 update, has been secretly developed with T-Mobile and could change the way people stay connected in remote areas.
No More Pointing at the Sky
Previously, Apple used Globalstar for emergency satellite messaging, requiring users to point their phone at the sky for a signal. Now, thanks to Starlink, users can send texts directly from their pockets without aiming at satellites.
For now, the feature is text-only, but voice calls and data services are expected in the future. Elon Musk even confirmed that medium-resolution images, music, and podcasts should work with Starlink’s current generation satellites, while the next-generation will support video streaming.
Who Gets Access?
Currently, only a small number of iPhone users on T-Mobile’s network in the U.S. have received beta test invitations. The update applies to iPhone 14 and newer models.
How to Enable Starlink Satellite Texting
Users in the beta program will see a new toggle switch in their cellular data settings to manage the feature. T-Mobile has already sent messages to beta testers, stating:
“You’re in the T-Mobile Starlink beta. You can now stay connected with texting via satellite from virtually anywhere. To start experiencing coverage beyond, please update to iOS 18.3.”
